Ghost Train OF CHRISTMAS PAST
Interesting cultural observation, this kind of celebration of Christmas is really new in England. I’m only 30, and I don’t remember things like this popping up even 10 years ago, let alone 20.
Of course there are/were Father Christmases are in the middle of shopping centres before this; even small towns and villages halls had a few Christmas markets with the WI selling festive jam and the Brownies raising money for their new guide hut with reindeer “poo” truffles, but this whole pseudo German/Scandi winter wonderland mash up has only popped up in the past 10 years or so. Places that don’t do so well in winter money wise (theme parks, zoos etc) realise that they can tag Christmas onto something and it’ll make money in a season they usually don’t- and more power to them, really.
Before then it was the usual town markets mixed in with a few Christmassy goods from the local farmer and the florist selling wreathes, as well as the dodgy dude who usually sells cleaning products on his stall selling a bit of tinsel, “as it’s Christmas, like.” Now it’s mulled wine from the burger van, and my family making gingerbread houses (another Christmas thing borrowed from the Germans.) Amazing.
Shit, speaking of mulled wine- it being sold pre mixed is a relatively new thing. England Didn’t Do mulled wine on such a mass scale before (unlike here in Sweden where there’s a huge bloody glögg section at the booze store) it was left to the expats and the Guardianista foodie types who wanted to impress by making a batch, but now the Tesco Express stock it for two for a tenner. I wonder how long it’ll be popular for?
Don;t mind me, just poking the zeitgeist. The rise and fall of trends are pretty fascinating, and this mash up of outside of England euro Christmas hybrid the UK currently does now is pretty interesting, as where the hell did it come from?
I like Tori Amos. But I’m a bit of a purist. I’m not too crazy about these ridiculous later albums, with their conceptualization and guitar tracks and modern ideas - Abnormally Attracted To Sin, Strange Little Girls, Little Earthquakes… Forget about it. That’s why my favorite album is Wedding Performance 1978. Definitely her peak year. Just my two cents :-)
